Exercise technique

  1. Band attachment

Secure both bands to the rack sides at equal heights and distances.

  2. Bar ends

Attach the bands securely and symmetrically to both bar ends using non-slip connections.

  3. Test

With an empty or light bar, check band paths, hook clearance and top tension.

  4. Bench position

Plant your feet and secure your shoulder blades and hips on the pad.

  5. Lower

Lower slowly to the lower chest; keep the bands from slackening enough to disrupt control.

  6. Press

Exhale and raise the bar, extending both arms evenly against increasing band resistance.

  7. Rerack

Balance the bar on both hooks; do not open your hands early while the bands remain tensioned.

Key technique points

Common mistakes

Unequal anchors

Do not attach the bands in different positions; prevent the rising bar from being pulled sideways.

Insecure end attachment

Do not use loose placement that allows a band to slip from the bar; verify attachments before every set.

Excessive top resistance

Reduce band or bar load if elbow alignment fails at the top; do not finish lockout with torso momentum.

Slack at the bottom

Do not let the bands go fully slack and then retension abruptly; set starting length appropriately.

Chest bounce

Do not hit your chest for speed against the increasing resistance; maintain soft bottom control.

Catching on the rack

Do not drag a band over a hook while reracking; test entry and exit paths beforehand.
