Keep your upper arm close to your torso and bend your elbow to about 90 degrees.

Bring your forearm in front of your abdomen and keep your wrist neutral.
- Rotate
Move your hand outward without shifting your elbow.
- Range
Stop at the outward angle you can reach without moving your shoulder or turning your torso.
- Return
Slowly resist the inward pull of the band as you return to the start.
Key technique points
- You may place a thin towel between your elbow and torso.
- Choose light band tension.
- Rotate your forearm in a horizontal plane.
- Keep your shoulder away from your ear.
- Do not change direction through your wrist.
- Check the range separately on each side.
Common mistakes
Rotating the torso
Do not turn your chest toward the working side to increase outward range.
Moving the elbow out
Do not lift your upper arm sideways and turn external rotation into arm abduction.
Bending the wrist backward
Do not move your hand through wrist motion instead of shoulder rotation.
Choosing excessive tension
Do not use a band that makes you swing beyond the control of the small rotator cuff muscles.
Pulling the shoulder back
Do not forcefully squeeze your shoulder blade back to imitate forearm rotation.
Returning inward too quickly
Do not let the band pull your hand into your abdomen.
